Marinduque : Stations of the Cross at the Boac Cathedral

Boac Cathedral is dedicated in honor of the blessed "Virgin of Biglang Awa" and seats on a hill overlooking the town of Boac. Built in 1792, it is where Filipinos and Spaniards sought refuge from pirate attacks during that time. Its architecture is of Filipino-Hispanic Gothic with most of the original construction preserved; such as the facade and main body, the belfry and the altar. The stained glass windows embellish the walls and augment the age-old beauty of the church.

Aside from the facade and stone walls, it is also important to note the wooden doors with stunning and intricate carvings of the four Evangelists that welcomes every parishioner.

It is considered a historical church because it is said to be where the Katipunan Flag was baptized. The Our Lady of Immaculate Conception is the patron saint of Boac, while Birhen ng Biglang-Awa is the patron saint of the province of Marinduque.

After witnessing the Via Crusis on the streets of Boac, we had a quick lunch and proceeded to the cathedral to have our own way of commemorating the Passion of Christ through the “Stations of the Cross”. With the help of a prayer booklet, we took turns in leading the prayer and in meditation on the chief scenes of Jesus Christ's sufferings and death.

Happened last April 21-23, 2011, here's a series of posts on this one of a kind Moriones Festival experience in Boac Marinduque, Philippines. Thanks to Ajel and Julius for letting me use some of their photos in this series.
