Nestled in the foothills of the dormant volcano, Mt. Arayat lies a new lifestyle destination called Abe's Farm. "Abé", a Capampangan term which means "friend", is named after Emilio Aguilar Cruz, an esteemed writer, artist, bon vivant and food lover. It is a sprawling property in Magalang Pampanga which offers quiet and relaxing hideaway perfect for a countryside vacation with your family and friends.
Abe's Farm has a restaurant, swimming pool, spa, a museum and accommodations to cater to the visiting guests. The restaurant is set on an old nipa rest house which feels like your grandparent's house in the province with bamboo and antique wood furniture dominating its interiors. It has separate dining areas complemented with a charming ambiance coming from the large open windows, wooden chairs and tables, and lovely interiors.
They take pride on their wide array of Capampangan food and signature dishes from the other restaurant-members of their chain of restaurants. They serve a variety of appetizers, soups, salads and relishes, grills, stews, fried dishes, vegetables, noodles, sandwiches and desserts.
For lunch during the Metro Angeles Food Tour 2014 held last month, we went to Abe's Farm and sampled on some great food that they offer.
Bamboo Rice (PHP 250.00)Mountain rice cooked with shrimps, wood ear mushrooms, and bamboo shoots steamed in a bamboo shell. It's fragrant and so flavorful.
Paco Fern & Tomato Salad (PHP 155.00)Young rainforest fern with tomato and salted red egg in a light salad dressing and capsicum. I love how fresh the ferns and the tomatoes are. So refreshing!
Fried Lumpia (PHP 135.00)Spring rolls of fresh vegetables. It's crispy and tasty. Dip it in vinegar and it's bursting with rich flavors.
Gising-gising (PHP 240.00)Sliced kangkong stalks sautéed in red hot chili peppers and coconut milk. If you've been to Bistro Remedios in Malate, this is the same gising-gising they offer. It has the right richness of the coconut milk or gata. Quite hot and spicy but tolerable.
Sinuteng Baby Pusit (PHP 175.00)Sautéed baby squid in garlic and olive oil. The baby squids were cooked just right making it so tender. I loved it!
Knockout Knuckles (PHP 595.00)Their own rendition of Crispy Pata, an all-time Filipino favorite. It is whole leg of pork deep-fried in garlic and chilies and then topped with special spicy garlic. This is so heavenly!
Crispy Pork Adobo ni Lola Ising (PHP 395.00)Stewed pork belly (liempo) in soy and vinegar, fried crisp and topped with popped garlic. A sauceless adobo but definitely not dry. It is so tender and has the right balance of the soy sauce and the vinegar. The extra garlic flavor adds up to the richness of the dish.
Binukadkad na Pla Pla (PHP 395.00)Overgrown tilapia, butterflied and fried to delightful crispiness and served with Balo-Balo relish and mustasa leaves on the side. So fresh and crispy!
Klasik Kare Kare (PHP 595.00)My all-time favorite! Abe's Kare-kare has Oxtail and tripe stewed in peanut sauce with assorted vegetables. It has rich, thick peanut sauce with just the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. The veggies are fresh, crunchy and not overcooked. The bagoong on the side perfectly compliments it. It didn't disappoint me. It's what a good-tasting kare-kare should be.
Betute (PHP 290.00)A Kapampangan specialty, Betute are deep fried farm frogs stuffed with minced pork, garlic, and spices. I love it! It tastes like chicken, smells clean and the stuffing is quite flavorful. This one is definitely a must-try when dining in Pampanga.
Tamarind ShakeA refreshing drink made from fresh tamarind or sampalok. It was so good. You can actually taste the rich tamarind flavor in it.
TuronA classic Filipino dessert or merienda, Abe's turon is made extra special by adding langka on it. This is best eaten while hot.
Sikreto ni Maria (PHP 165.00)At first, you'll think that it's just the usual vanilla ice cream. But wait until is reveals its "secret." It has the flavors of fresh mangoes and sticky rice inside! This is one of my favorites!
Overall, dining at Abe's Farm is the best way to sample on authentic and sumptuous Kapampangan cuisine. The place is serene, quiet and exudes a homey ambiance. The staff are cheerful, pleasant and very friendly. For the quality of food and serving size, their prices are quite reasonable.
So, if you are up for a gastronomic treat of delicious and authentic Kapampangan cuisines, dine at Abe's Farm and experience a food adventure like no other!
