Best Things to Do in Camiguin, Tourist Spots & Itinerary

Planning a trip to Camiguin? Here are my top 10 things to do in Camiguin, tourist spots and best places to visit for your Camiguin itinerary!

Dubbed as the "Island Born of Fire", Camiguin is a pear-shaped island province known to have several volcanoes and volcanic domes. It is said that volcanic eruptions and land movements have created this spectacular island bursting with natural wonders in a bucolic setting.

Camiguin is the 2nd smallest province in the Philippines, next to Batanes. In fact, you can visit Camiguin's tourist spots and attractions and go around the whole island in one day! But for me, the best itinerary for Camiguin is 2 days and 1 night or even 3 days and 2 nights for you to fully enjoy what Camiguin has to offer.

From natural to man-made attractions, you can find many places and do many things in Camiguin. Here's a list of some of Camiguin's top tourist spots, attractions and best things to do and experience that will also serve as your travel guide in exploring "the island born of fire"! I hope, this also serves as your guide in creating your own Camiguin itinerary!

Dark Tourism is the act of travel and visitation to sites, attractions and exhibitions which have real or recreated death, suffering or the seemingly macabre as a main theme (as mentioned by thepinaysolobackpacker.com). Honestly, I didn't know that there's such a term not until she posted an article about it on her blog. In my previous travels, I have been visiting remarkable cemeteries in different parts of our country. I have acquired a fascination not only on heritage houses but also with old and interesting cemeteries that are rich in history and has a lot of "out of the ordinary" stories to tell.

Camiguin - Day Tour Part 2: White Island, Cathedral, Capitol and Katibawasan Falls

And so we continued the tour... As we traverse through the island's well-paved circumferential hi-way, I can't help but ask Kuya Jojo to stop for a while so I could take photos and enjoy the stunning sceneries. There are parts where there are only a few houses around and all you can see is the sea on the left and the hillside on your right. I've also noticed that public transportation is rare and the common mode of transportation is motorcycle.

Camiguin - Delighted to See Ancestral Houses

Honestly, I didn’t do much research before going to Camiguin. I never thought that I would find ancestral houses in this tiny island, just like what I saw in Silay, Taal, Boac and Vigan. Camiguin still has a number of striking and elaborate ancestral houses that date back to Spanish and American Colonial Periods. These houses can be seen as you pass through the island's well paved circumferential hi-way.

Camiguin - Day Tour Part 1: Giant Clams, Church Ruins, Old Volcano Trail and Sunken Cemetery

After closing the deal with my habal-habal driver, I hopped into his motorcycle and we commenced the whole day tour of the island. He specifically discussed to me where we would go. Since I only have 1 day to spend, I just picked the places I want. I don't want to rush myself in covering all the sites just for the sake of going there and have a photo taken, I want to take it slow and enjoy each spot that we're going to visit.

It's day 2 of my Solo Northern Mindanao Adventure. I woke up early to prepare for a long day of experiencing the splendour of the island of Camiguin. From my hostel in Capistrano St., Cagayan de Oro City, I went to Agora Market Terminal and arrived just in time for the 5:30 AM trip of Bachelor Express Bus bound for Butuan. I paid 143 pesos for the 2 hour trip from Cagayan de Oro to Balingoan; told the driver to drop me at Balingoan and dozed off from the moment the bus started to move.
