Vacation proposing: top tips for getting it right

427

Finding the right moment to propose to your partner is daunting enough as it is, but the location is also key. So it comes as no surprise to hear that the vast majority of people prefer to propose somewhere where the sun is shining, the weather is warmer, and the setting is picture perfect.

Where you decide to get engaged is a memorable moment with a special meaning to both of you. So, if you have plans of popping the question in another country, here are our top tips to ensure the experience goes as smoothly as possible.

Do your research

Be sure to do your research and find somewhere truly special. Whether it's a popular restaurant, a location with a view or a popular attraction - be sure to find somewhere that’s breathtaking. Think of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Blue Lagoon in Iceland or the Empire State Building over in New York. Do your research well in advance and pick a location that will be memorable for all of the right reasons.

Plan the ring ahead of your trip

Long haul trips are usually planned way in advance and even short city breaks require some notice to ensure that you and your partner can both take some days off work to avoid an awkwardly timed flight. If you’ve decided to take the plunge and propose while you’re away, you must take a similar planning approach with your engagement ring and make sure you have it before your trip. If you’re unsure where to look, take a look at a site such as Diamonds Factory where you’ll find a huge selection.

Safely store your engagement ring

The most nerve-wracking part of proposing abroad is getting the engagement ring over safely. You’ll want to make sure it is safe at all times but don’t want to get caught with it going through airport security as your big plan will be exposed. The best place to store your ring is in your carry on bag. You could even include a note saying something like “please be discreet” should airport security ask you to open up the bag.

Once you’ve arrived at your destination, put it somewhere safe and hidden in your room until you need it. An engagement ring is a huge investment, so be sure to look after it.

Remember insurance

Insurance is always important when you're going abroad or planning a holiday, but it’s even more important if you’re carrying an engagement ring. Should the unimaginable happen, and you lose or damage the ring before you've popped the question, you’ll at least have something to fall back on.

You’ve arrived, time to propose and relax

Finally, it’s time to put some thought into that big moment. How you’re going to do it and what you’re going to do. These are the questions that only you know the answer to. Be prepared for all eventualities including weather and don’t rule out being spontaneous when it feels right. You’ve got one shot at this, relax and make it count. Good luck!
