Calaba Bridge is a 900-meter Austrian Modular Bridge built across Abra River, one of the largest river systems in the Philippines. It was designed by Waagner Biro Philippines, Inc. and was completed in the year 2010. Constructed along the Abra-Ilocos Norte National Road, it connects the three municipalities of La Paz, Danglas and Lagayan to Bangued, the capital town of Abra.
It greatly helps the people of Abra by reducing the travel time from Bangued to these municipalities and to Laoag City by at least one hour, passing through the Abra-Ilocos Norte Road.
The construction of this bridge was a very helpful relief for the locals compared to what they have been doing for many years in the past - using a ferry boat just to cross the river. There would be times that they cannot cross because of the swelling of the river especially during rainy season, making it oftentimes impassable, which interrupts the transfer of goods and services.
The inauguration ceremony of the Calaba Bridge project was done on May 3, 2010.
We visited this bridge on our way back to Bangued after our quick visit to Tayum, Abra.
HOW TO GET TO ABRA
From Manila, take an air conditioned bus bound for Bangued, Abra. You may take Partas Bus Lines with their terminal in Aurora Boulevard, Quezon City. Fare is around 650 pesos and travel time is 8-9 hours.In Bangued, you could take a tricycle going to Calaba Bridge. Travel time is around 15 minutes. Alternatively, you could rent a tricycle for 300 pesos for a tour around the different tourist spots in Bangued and Tayum. You may contact Kuya Ariel at 09067336857.
