Ifugao - Seeing the Banaue Rice Terraces, "A Childhood Dream Fulfilled!"

The Banaue Rice Terraces are the wonderful works of our ancestors in Ifugao province. Carved into the mountains some 2000 years ago, it is still being used to plant rice, vegetables and other crops. It's "a childhood dream come true" for me to see it as I grew up learning it from the Social Studies books I have in grade school. I am delighted to finally see it for myself.

It is just unfortunate that the younger generations of Ifugaos have little interest in farming. As a result, these rice terraces are now deteriorating and needs rehabilitation and care. Nonetheless, it is still picturesque and certainly a feast to my eyes.

We reached this rice terraces viewpoint during a stopover on our way to Sagada, Mountain Province. Most jeepneys en route to Sagada stop here for a few minutes so you could see the rice terraces and take photos as well.

Contrary to what most people know, the Banaue Rice Terraces are not part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site List. The list only includes clusters of rice terraces in Batad, Bangaan, Hungduan, Mayoyao Central and Nagacadan.

There are more rice terraces that I have to see. Especially the ones inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site's Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordillera. Hopefully soon, I'll be able to visit again and see more rice terraces.

HOW TO GET THERE

As of April 2012, the only bus company that has direct trips to Banaue is Ohayami Bus Company. Their terminal is located in Lacson Avenue, corner Fajardo St., Sampaloc Manila (near University of Sto. Tomas). Travel time from Manila to Banaue is about 9 hours, fare is 450 pesos.
