Leyte - The Neoclassical Leyte Provincial Capitol Building

Built in 1907, the imposing Leyte Provincial Capitol Building has a stunning neoclassical architecture typical of American-era government edifices. It played a significant part of Philippine history as it briefly became the seat of Philippine Commonwealth Government from October 23, 1944 to February 27, 1945.

The building features two bas relief depicting the First Christian Mass held in the island of Limasawa and the historical landing of Gen. Douglas MacArthur on Red Beach, Palo Leyte.

National Historical Institute marker reads:

"Capitol Building of the Philippines, 1944-1945

On the steps of this Capitol Building of Leyte was formally installed, 23 October 1944, Sergio Osmeña as president of the Commonwealth of the Philippines by Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the presence of cabinetmen, liberation forces and many other grateful people. Henceforth, until 27 February 1945, this edifice served as the Capitol Building of the Philippines."

Located at the corner of Sen. Enage Street and Magsaysay Boulevard, it now serves as the seat of the provincial government of the Province of Leyte.

This is the last spot that we visited in Leyte while we enjoyed "people watching" at the capitol complex.

This is a part of my Leyte and Southern Leyte Adventure Getaway last October 1-2, 2011. This is my 2nd time to visit Leyte, the 36th province on my list. Kudos to my friend, JM, for accompanying me and for preparing everything on this trip. Join me as I unravel Leyte's rich history, culture and natural resources.
