Lanao del Norte - Witnessing the Stunning and Strong Maria Christina Falls, a Dream Come True!

Maria Cristina Falls is part of the Agus River, a major source of electricity in Mindanao. It is a landmark located in the "City of Majestic Waterfalls" - Iligan City. The second highest falls in the Philippines at 320 - feet high, it is sometimes called "twin falls" because the flow of the water in the falls is separated by a rock at the edge of the waterfall. The waterfall is also the primary source of electric power generated by the Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant.

It is also called as "now-you-see-it-now-you-don't" waterfalls, due to the man-made controls set up by the National Power Corporation. We were so lucky, it was in full blast when we visited the falls.

I guess there are times that they control the flow of the water. It would be best if you go there on a weekend to see Maria and Christina's full grandeur. Just like this...

I just know about Maria Christina Falls from the text books I used to read when I was in grade school. Since then, it was a dream for me to finally see this stunning waterfalls.

I was speechless! I can't believe that it's right in front of me. Its strong cascades are amazingly alluring and splendid.

A grand view if the waterfalls can be seen from the viewing deck. We went up to Maria Christina Power Plant's viewing deck at the 3rd floor of the building. The view is truly jaw-dropping!

HOW TO GET THERE
It is located 8.5 kilometers away southwest of the city proper. From the city proper, take a jeepney bound for Buru-un. Tell the driver to drop you at the crossing going to Maria Cristina Falls. Fare is about 12.00 pesos and travel time is around 15-20 minutes. Then walk towards the NPC complex for about 5-10 minutes.

This is a part of my trip to the cities of Marawi, Iligan and Ozamiz last September 16-18, 2011. Iligan City in Lanao del Norte is the 38th province on my list and a part my 10th solo trip. Discover the places I've been to, the friendships I've made, the food I tasted and the experiences I gained as I explore the city of majestic waterfalls!

    1. @mozilla. as of now, safe naman lugar namin. if you dont have friends around the area, you could stay at pension houses sa city. d'murvey suites is P250/12hours. ang famous is P300/day. cheaper rin ang pamasahe and accessible rin ang places na gusto mong puntahan. aside from visiting the water falls, if like pools, you can try Timoga Spring Resorts. located in buru-un rin yan malapit lapit sa Ma.Cristina. One of the tourist's spots yan because of its nature spring flowing water. Or you can also try Maze Park resort, sa buru-un rin. if you know cebuano language then you can communicate with the locales. prior to other's beliefs, iligan has a huge percentage of cebuano speakers, then maranao dialect, then others. we still can communicate with tagalog though and english too. i hope you have a nice experience in iligan (though after sendong na). p.s. the devastated places are becoming tourist attraction too. sad but true.
