Fukuoka is located in the southern part of Japan. It is the capital city of Fukuoka Prefecture on the northern shore of the Japanese island of Kyushu - the third largest island in Japan. It is Kyushu's largest and one of Japan's ten most populated cities. As an important harbor city, many travelers visit Fukuoka to enjoy its many amazing and interesting tourist spots and attractions, gastronomic offerings, and its many shopping destinations. Fukuoka has a long history. It is a product of the fusion of two former towns: the castle town of Fukuoka and the merchant and port town of Hakata. The two towns were combined in 1889 which form the present day Fukuoka City. Despite that, Hakata remained as the name of one of Fukuoka City’s central districts and its main railway station.
