Sydney is more than its harbour, and deserves to be explored! Within a short drive, you’ve got coastal walks, national parks, iconic wine regions and relaxing beach towns that feel worlds away from the city hype and will treat you to some amazing experiences. If you want to know what there is to do around Sydney, here are some of the best activities.
Walk the Bondi to Coogee coastal track
If there’s one coastal walk you shouldn’t skip when in Sydney, it’s Bondi to Coogee. This stretch of beautiful coastline delivers unparalleled Sydney views the whole way. Cliffs, rock pools, and a wide open ocean, you’d be crazy not to go for it. The full walk is about six kilometres and totally doable in a few hours.
Heading off in the early morning is your best bet to avoid crowds and heat, especially in summer. Pack water, decent shoes and swimmers because you’ll definitely be tempted to stop for a dip at one of the beaches along the way. With a campervan, you can park near either end and avoid relying on public transport.
Explore the Royal Botanic Garden and the harbour foreshore
Sometimes the simple options are the best. The Royal Botanic Garden sits right on the harbour and gives you front-row views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge without the chaos of the main tourist zones.
It’s an easy place to spend a relaxed morning walking the paths, grabbing a takeaway coffee and just soaking up the harbour atmosphere. If you’re travelling in a camper, nearby parking stations or designated bays around the city fringe make access straightforward. This is also a good low-effort day if you’ve just arrived and want something scenic without a long drive.
Head north to the Northern Beaches
When locals want space from the city, they head north. The Northern Beaches stretch for kilometres and feel noticeably more laid back than Bondi. Manly is the obvious starting point. It boasts great surf, numerous cafés, and a relaxed holiday atmosphere.
If you keep driving north, places like Narrabeen and Avalon start to feel quieter and more local. This is where having your own vehicle really pays off. Beach hopping is much easier when you’re not relying on ferries or buses, and you can chase the best conditions on the day.
Take on the Spit Bridge to Manly walk
If you’re keen for a longer harbour walk, the Spit Bridge to Manly track is a standout. It runs through bushland, quiet beaches and harbour lookouts that most visitors never see. The full walk is around 10 kilometres, so it’s worth starting early and bringing snacks and water.
The big payoff is finishing in Manly, where you can reward yourself with lunch near the water. With a campervan, many travellers park near Manly and use public transport or rideshare to reach the starting point, then walk back toward their vehicle.
Watch the sunset at Nielsen Park
For a slower-paced afternoon, Nielsen Park is hard to beat. It’s tucked inside Sydney Harbour National Park and feels surprisingly peaceful given how close it is to the city. The small harbour beaches here are perfect for a swim, and the sunset views across the water are excellent.
Bring something simple for a picnic, and you’ve got an easy half-day outing sorted. Parking is available nearby, but like most Sydney coastal spots, arriving earlier in the afternoon makes life easier.
Drive out to the Blue Mountains
If you’ve got a full day (or ideally overnight), the Blue Mountains are one of the best escapes from Sydney. You’re looking at roughly a 90-minute drive west, and the scenery changes quickly once you climb into the ranges.
Top stops include Echo Point for views of the Three Sisters, short bushwalks around Katoomba and longer hikes if you’re feeling energetic. The cooler mountain air is also a nice break from Sydney’s summer humidity. This is where camper travel really shines. Instead of rushing back to the city, you can stay overnight at a nearby campground and properly explore the next morning.
Hire a campervan in Sydney
Hiring a camper gives you the flexibility to move at your own pace, stay close to nature and avoid the rigid schedule of day tours. If you’re planning your trip, renting a Travellers Autobarn campervan from Sydney is a smooth and easy process. They have a variety of options for you to check out, too, so you can find the right camper for your trip.
Final thoughts
Sydney is an incredible city, but some of the best experiences sit just beyond the obvious tourist spots. Once you’ve got your own wheels, the coastline, bushland and mountain escapes all open up quickly. Plan a loose route, allow extra time for spontaneous stops and don’t try to cram too much into one day. With the right setup, exploring around Sydney becomes less about ticking boxes and more about enjoying the drive.
