Agusan del Sur - A Close Encounter with Lolong, the World's Largest Crocodile in Captivity

Lolong is the world's largest crocodile ever caught in captivity, a possible entry to Guinness Book of World Records. With a length 20 feet and 3 inches and a weight of 2,370 pounds, he is now considered as largest crocodile in captivity. He was caught on September 3, 2011 in a creek in the town of Bunawan in Agusan del Sur after the joint efforts of the residents, the local government unit and some crocodile hunters from Palawan.

Lolong became an instant celebrity as many people trooped to Bunawan wanting to see him. As of posting time, the announcement of Lolong's world record size is said to be done anytime this month.

When I saw Lolong for the first time on TV and newspapers, I was really shocked as to how big this crocodile is. So, when I planned a trip to Agusan del Sur, I included a visit to Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center to personally see this huge crocodile.

I know, these photos could not give justice to the real size of the crocodile. You really have to see it for yourself. It would be best to see him at a time when they are changing the water to reveal the scale of this humongous beast.

Entrance fee to the Bunawan Ecopark and Wildlife Reservation Center is 20 pesos for adults and 15 pesos for children. Proceeds will be used for the maintenance of the ecopark as well as for Lolong’s food and needs.

At the time of my visit, facilities are being developed within the ecopark to cater the increasing arrival of tourists wanting to see Lolong.

So, if you visit Agusan del Sur, drop by the town of Bunawan and witness how big this crocodile is.
