Lanao del Sur - Visiting King Faisal Mosque

A mosque is a Muslim place for prayer and worship. It comes from the Arabic word masjid which means "a place of prostration" to God. Being an Islamic City, Marawi has a lot of Mosques. I'm glad that even with a limited time, I was able to visit at least one of Marawi City's mosques.

The King Faisal Mosque is located inside Mindanao State University. It was named after the former King of Saudi Arabia, who supported and financed its construction, as well as the establishment of the Islamic, Arabic and Asian Studies Center inside the campus.

The word "Mosque" is commonly used by non-Muslims to refer to the Muslim's holy place of worship; but the more appropriate term is Masjid and this is the term used by Muslims.

Visiting a mosque will be more pleasant if you know the appropriate etiquette to follow. Here are some guidelines I found online:
  • Visit a mosque anytime when regular group prayers or sermons are not taking place.
  • Dress appropriately as to not disrespect worshipers.
  • Remove your shoes before you enter the mosque.
  • Sit down and take a moment for quiet meditation.
  • Take children to a mosque only if they are old enough to be able to respect the rules as well.

This is the first time I visited a Mosque. It is truly an amazing experience! Hope to visit more in my future trips!

Go to Bulua-Westbound Bus Terminal, take a bus going to Iligan City and get off at Southbound Terminal (1.5 hours) then take an MSU bound jeepney (1 hour). Alternatively, you can take a shuttle van from the terminal that ply the CDO-Marawi City route.

This is a part of my trip to the cities of Marawi, Iligan and Ozamiz last September 16-18, 2011. Marawi City in Lanao del Sur is the 37th province on my list and a part my 10th solo trip. Discover the places I've been to, new friendships I've made and the experiences I gained in this quick visit to the Islamic City of Marawi.
