Keeping sickness at bay - 5 tips to keep yourself fit and healthy on the road

tips to keep yourself fit and healthy on the road

When your adventures abroad have been months or even years in the making, the last thing you want is to have your travel plans cut short due to illness. When you’re on the other side of the world and you suddenly become sick, it’s not only frustrating that you’re missing out on your limited time abroad, but it suddenly becomes apparent how isolated and even vulnerable it can make you feel.

This is even more so with the current COVID-19 pandemic, as more than ever we are worrying about our health, as well as the wellbeing of those around us. For many of us, our trips have been cancelled due to coronavirus, leaving thousands of people disappointed. However, the last thing you want on your trip is to find yourself unwell and having to self-isolate, so in some cases, it is wiser to stay at home. Are you confused or concerned about the status of your trip due to COVID-19? See Creditfix for more information on your holiday cancellation rights.

As far as sickness is concerned, prevention is better than cure. And while there are countless ways you can fall ill abroad, as long as you follow some basic health and hygiene practices, you should be able to enjoy your trip overseas without any issues.

Read on for 5 tips to keep yourself fit and healthy on the road.

Sun protection

Sunstroke, dehydration, migraines and sunburn. None of these things are fun and each one is incredibly debilitating. The solution? Some straightforward sun protection habits. A good pair of sunglasses is essential and you should never leave for the day without a sun hat - one that covers your neck is preferable. A refillable water bottle so you can keep yourself hydrated and a strong sunblock with a factor of 50 are both important things to keep closeby. It's also a good idea to opt for loose, cotton-based clothing rather than clothing made of synthetic materials that won't allow your skin to breathe in the heat.

Wash your hands

We all understand the importance of washing our hands before we eat and after we’ve used the bathroom (especially with what is currently going on in the world). But, when you’re on the other side of the world you may need to step it up a gear. Washing your hands before you eat is crucial as is keeping your hands clean after handling cash or touching things like door handles and stray animals. If the hand washing facilities aren’t great then carry a small bottle of hand sanitiser on you. Halt the spreading of germs.

Be wary of the water

If you’re visiting a country where sanitation is questionable, or the water quality is unsafe then it’s best to avoid drinking the tap water. Avoid ice in your drinks and eating anything that may have been washed in the local water. The locals may drink the water because they’re used to it. If you want to avoid becoming ill then stick to bottled water, boil the water before you consume it, or purchase some water sterilising tablets.

Get vaccinated

Before you travel, make sure that you’re aware of any vaccinations you need to have before you arrive at your destination. Speak with your GP and make sure you have these administered before you travel. Some countries may not permit you entry without proof you’ve had the relevant vaccinations.

Get enough sleep

Our bodies are more susceptible to illness when we’re run down and when we’re not getting enough sleep. It’s not easy to sleep on the road – hostels aren’t exactly the most peaceful of places – but try to rest as much as possible and listen to your body so you don’t burn yourself out.
