Leyte - Waking up in an Island Paradise called Canigao

It's day 2 of our overnight camping trip in Canigao island. We were wide awake even before the sun came out. We were just sitting at the shoreline waiting for the dawn to break. The sound of the waves and the cool breeze of the air are our companion. We were in the offing as a new day unfolds.

After about an hour, we decided to walk around the island and explore. We were so early, that we even saw some locals with their freshly caught fishes ready to be sold at the market.

As we moved farther, we're able to really appreciate the serenity one can get in Canigao island. The ruggedness of the beach, its starkness and isolation from the mainland make this island paradise exceptional.

To our surprise, a long sandbar greeted us. We were extremely at awe and excitedly walked towards it.

There were still no traces of footprints, I guess we're the first one to go here. We enjoyed the clear and calm water while waiting for the sunrise. We enjoyed it! Tranquillity at its finest!

We continued walking until we reach its end and had a panoramic view of Canigao island. Good thing, it's still early morning and there's not too much people around. We were actually the only one exploring the sand bar at that time. Hehehe!

Afterwards, we proceeded to the market to get some food for breakfast. We bought half a kilo of freshly caught fish (60 PHP) and had it grilled (35 PHP) plus the remaining rice we had the previous night.

After breakfast, we went back to the shoreline to have a good swim. The beach is really gorgeous! It may not have the finest white sand, but hey! it's definitely one of the best beaches I've been to!

Toilets and shower rooms are available in the island. So, after a few hours of bumming in the beach, we took a shower and packed our things.

In getting back to the mainland, you just have to take any boat docked at the shoreline. Fare is already included in the 50 pesos that was paid in going to the island.

And we bid goodbye to Canigao island...

HOW TO GET THERE
From Tacloban City, take a van (Duptours or Van-Vans) bound for Maasin City. Tell the Driver to drop you at Brgy. Nonok or Sta Fe in Matalom, Leyte. Fare is around 200 pesos and travel time is about 3 hours. From here, look for banca operators that shuttles passengers to Canigao island. Fare is 50 pesos and travel time is 15-20 minutes.

This is a part of my Leyte and Southern Leyte Adventure Getaway last October 1-2, 2011. This is my 2nd time to visit Leyte, the 36th province on my list. 12. didn't know about this island. we once went to Digyo Island in Inopacan, which is part of the Cuatros Islas. The island is really uninhabited except for a caretaker who stays on the other side of the island. My family was the only one who stayed overnight there on our trip. no electricity, just the sound of the waves lulling you to sleep.
