Camiguin - En Route to the "Island Born of Fire"

It's day 2 of my Solo Northern Mindanao Adventure. I woke up early to prepare for a long day of experiencing the splendour of the island of Camiguin. From my hostel in Capistrano St., Cagayan de Oro City, I went to Agora Market Terminal and arrived just in time for the 5:30 AM trip of Bachelor Express Bus bound for Butuan. I paid 143 pesos for the 2 hour trip from Cagayan de Oro to Balingoan; told the driver to drop me at Balingoan and dozed off from the moment the bus started to move.

Tweet : On board a bus bound for Butuan, will get off at Balingoan Port.. Will be spending the rest of the day in Camiguin..

The sun is already up when we reached Balingoan Bus Terminal. I took another motorela (7 PHP) to Balingoan Ferry Port. You may also opt a leisurely walk to the port as it is just 150 meters away across the street.

I bought a ticket at the booth for the ferry bound for Benoni Port, Camiguin. A one-way ticket costs 170 pesos and travel time is about 1 hour. Ferries leave Balingoan to Camiguin Island every hour from 6:00 AM until 5:00 PM daily.

As there were only a few passengers aboard the ferry, I had the chance to roam around the boat. I savored the cool breeze of the air and the heat of the morning sunlight as we traverse through the Camiguin channel. I also enjoyed the view of the majestic island of Camiguin as it is already visible from the ferry.

Tweet : Thank God, the weather is so good.. I'm now on board a ferry, we'll be reaching Camiguin in a few minutes...

Camiguin is an island province situated in Bohol Sea, it is roughly 10 KM off the northern coast of the province of Misamis Oriental. With a land area of approximately 30,000 hectares, it is the smallest province in Northern Mindanao. Politically divided into 5 towns, namely: Catarman, Guinsiliban, Mahinog, Sagay and Mambajao; it only has 14,826 households, making it the second smallest in the Philippines in terms of population.

The province is well-known as the island "Born of Fire" for it has seven volcanoes and several volcanic domes. It is said that volcanic eruptions and land movements have created this spectacular island bursting with natural wonders in a bucolic setting.

Upon reaching Benoni Port, transport services such as habal-habal (single motorcycles) and multicabs will swarm on you like bees. It would be best if you already contacted someone for the tour so as to avoid getting annoyed (like what happened to me) with the other transport service operators in the port.

It is important that you get services only from someone you can trust. I highy recommend Kuya Jojo (Contact #: 09059566288) for your tour on all the tourist spots in the island with his habal-habal (Rate: 800/day). He can also arrange for you a multicab (Rate: 1,200-1,500/day) if you are going on a big group.

What’s good about him is he knows well where to bring you and gives a handful of information on the spots you go to. He will be your tour guide, travel companion and photographer rolled into one. Thanks to Kuya Jojo for making my trip to Camiguin an enjoyable one!

Maupay na Pagdini ta Camiguin!

This is part of my Solo Northern Mindanao Adventure that happened last August 6-8, 2011. Camiguin is the 32nd province on my list and this Northern Mindanao adventure is my 7th solo trip.

  12. Sakto talaga ang post mo na to Mervs. will be in Camiguin in 2 weeks. So pwede pala habal-habal lang sa island tour? Akala ko multi-cab lang ang cheapest option. Sige will contact Kuya Jojo din. :-)
